Overview of the Responsibilities of a Student Volunteer
Student Volunteers are selected for the award on the basis of both your long-term academic achievements and present and future commitments to science, policy, and technologies, for applications that benefit the sound management of the world's resources.
For your convenience, following is a brief overview of volunteer duties:
- Volunteers are given a science and policy topic to read and in a short time accumulate knowledge of the topic.
- Volunteers arrive one day before the conference registration begins between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM to assist with set up. Volunteers function onsite as staff and work long hours each day.
- This includes room monitoring for sessions or other evening events on at least one evening during the conference. Please note: This is general information and staff/volunteers will adjust to suit the demands of the conference.
- Room Monitoring: These volunteers will serve as a room monitor for the track they are attending. Courses are assigned based on availability and the volunteer's request. As a room monitor, volunteers have three major duties:
- Checking Badges and answering attendees' questions. Room monitors check the badge of each attendee entering the classroom to make sure the attendee is in the right place. Also, using the Onsite Guide, room monitors answer whatever attendee questions they are able to, and direct the attendee to a Conference Staff member to answer those they cannot.
- Serving as a point of contact for their classroom. Room monitors are in charge of promptly notifying Conference staff of any problems which arise in their classroom during the day. (For instance: if room lighting suddenly changes or if the instructor would like it changed, if the Audio Visual (AV) equipment isn't working properly, or if the room temperature becomes uncomfortable). Processing Conference Evaluations. Room monitors are in charge of passing out, collecting and tallying course evaluations at the end of each conference day. Supervise/oversee the Poster Room to ensure that no one walks away with any of Conference equipment.
